Happiness Cafeterias
No matter where life takes us, there's nothing quite like a hot meal to bring comfort to an ordinary day. But have you ever wondered what lunch really looks like for our grandparents when we’re not around?
In Lanzhou, there are these "Happiness Cafeterias" specially for the elderly. The menus change with the solar terms—53 different sets of menus in rotation, so every day is different and every meal is made with care.
Since 2023, Lanzhou has set up 113 "Beautiful Lanzhou·Happiness Cafeterias". Just last year, 50 new ones were opened. They're spread all over the city, covering a 3-kilometer radius around each one, serving over 350,000 people every month on average.
Inside is bright and tidy. The tables and chairs have rounded corners — a thoughtful touch for the elderly, making everything feel warm and safe.
Technology here is full of warmth. Facial recognition links to your tray, and weighing is precise to the gram, cutting down waste and saving the trouble of cash and change.
A hot meal, three meals a day through all seasons. This warms more than just the stomach—it's a city's loving care for its elderly. In Lanzhou, more and more Happiness Cafeterias keep popping up. They turn "taking care of the elderly" from a slogan on the wall into that hot meal downstairs, into neighbors' smiles, into real life.
