【International Students in Community】Savoring Dumplings on The Winter Solstice

  

12月21日是中国二十四节气中的第二十二个节气——冬至,城关区白银路街道甘家巷社区一片欢声笑语,来自辖区的老少居民聚在一起做游戏、包饺子。其中,还有来自兰州大学的两位留学生徐俊浩和维卡也参与其中,大家一起度过了一个欢乐冬至节。

On December 21st, the 22nd solar term of the 24 solar terms in China—the Winter Solstice—the Ganjiaxiang Community in Baiyin Road Subdistrict, Chengguan District, was filled with laughter. Residents of all ages from the community gathered together to play games and wrap dumplings. Among them were two international students, Xu Junhao and Weika, from Lanzhou University, who also participated, making it a joyful Winter Solstice celebration for everyone.

活动伊始,社区工作人员向两位留学生介绍了冬至的由来和习俗,从医圣张仲景的“祛寒娇耳汤”,到现代饺子的多样化发展,让徐俊浩和维卡对中国饺子的历史和文化有了更多的了解。随后,大家一起玩文字游戏,按照游戏的输赢选择包饺子的馅料,这个环节不仅点燃了大家的竞争激情,也让整个活动在一片欢声笑语中热烈开场。

At the beginning of the event, community staff introduced the origins and customs of the Winter Solstice to the two international students. They explained the history and cultural significance of Chinese dumplings, from Zhang Zhongjing's "Cold-Relieving Dumpling Soup" to the modern diversification of dumplings, giving them a deeper understanding of the history and culture of Chinese dumplings. Following that, everyone played word games, with the winners choosing the fillings for the dumplings. This segment not only ignited everyone's competitive spirit but also set the lively tone for the event with laughter and excitement.

一轮角逐之后就到了选料环节,面对眼前琳琅满目的蔬菜与配料,徐俊浩和维卡显得有些困惑。社区工作人员耐心地为他们讲解了饺子馅料的种类和搭配。也让他们了解到,在中国,饺子馅料的多样性体现了不同地区的风味和个人口味,可以有无数种组合。比如当天准备的韭黄馅、酸菜馅、萝卜馅等等,都是深受本地居民喜爱的口味。

After a round of competition, it was time to select the fillings. Faced with a dazzling array of vegetables and ingredients, they seemed a bit puzzled. Community staff patiently explained the types and combinations of dumpling fillings to them. They learned that in China, the diversity of dumpling fillings reflects the flavors of different regions and personal tastes, offering countless combinations. For example, the fillings prepared that day, such as chives and egg, pickled cabbage, and radish, were all popular local flavors.

“我们组选择的是白菜肉馅儿!”选好馅料后,徐俊浩开始学习擀饺子皮,尝试几次后都擀不圆,在同组大姐的耐心指导下,他逐渐找到感觉,成功地擀了一个饺子皮后,徐俊浩高兴地说道:“这回我也能擀圆了!”一旁的维卡在一位年长的阿姨的帮助下也开始剁馅料,身形瘦小的她手持菜刀有规律地剁馅儿,没一会儿就感觉自己的手都酸了,“没想到包饺子有这么多的步骤,还挺有意思的!”

"Our group chose cabbage and pork filling!" After selecting the filling, Xu Junhao began learning to roll out the dumpling wrappers. After several attempts that didn't quite work, with the patient guidance of an older sister in his group, he gradually got the hang of it. After successfully rolling out a wrapper, Xu Junhao happily exclaimed, "Now I can roll them round too!" Meanwhile, Weika, with the help of an elderly aunt, started chopping the filling. Despite her petite frame, she rhythmically chopped the ingredients with a knife, quickly feeling her hands getting tired. "I didn't expect there to be so many steps in making dumplings; it's quite interesting!"

饺子皮和馅料准备完毕后正式开始包饺子环节,看着社区居民熟练的演示,徐俊浩和维卡也摩拳擦掌,他们认真学习每一个步骤。大家一边包饺子一边拉家常,分享各自国家的风俗习惯和文化特色。

With the wrappers and fillings prepared, it was time to start wrapping the dumplings. Watching the community residents demonstrate their skills, Xu Junhao and Weika eagerly rolled up their sleeves and carefully learned each step. As they wrapped the dumplings, they chatted and shared customs and cultural characteristics from their respective countries.

包好的饺子形态各异,有的像弯弯的月牙,有的像饱满的元宝。饺子煮熟后,大家推选两位留学生当评委,品尝每一组的饺子,并为他们打分。两人仔细地观察饺子的外观,品尝饺子的味道,维卡不禁赞叹道:“饺子的包法竟然如此多样,阿姨们的手真的很巧,这些饺子不仅好看,而且味道也非常棒!”他们觉得每一组的饺子都好吃,难分高下。最终,以饺子的数量和包法的多样性作为评判标准,决出了第一名。

The dumplings came in various shapes, some resembling curved crescents and others plump ingots. After the dumplings were cooked, everyone selected the two international students as judges to taste and score each group's dumplings. The two carefully observed the appearance of the dumplings and savored their flavors. Veika couldn't help but exclaim, "There are so many ways to wrap dumplings, and the aunties' hands are truly skillful! These dumplings are not only beautiful but also delicious!" They found each group's dumplings tasty and couldn't decide on a clear winner. Ultimately, the first place was determined based on the quantity of dumplings and the diversity of wrapping techniques.

这场“包饺子比赛”不仅让留学生们体验到了中国冬至的传统习俗,也为大家共同创造了一个温馨而难忘的回忆。徐俊浩和维卡表示,他们将会把这份美好的体验与更多的朋友们分享。

This "Dumpling Competition" not only allowed the international students to experience the traditional customs of the Chinese Winter Solstice but also created a warm and unforgettable memory for everyone involved. Xu Junhao and Weika expressed that they would share this wonderful experience with more friends.
